Successful ISO/IEC 20000 Foundation pilots
EXIN and TÜV SÜD Akademie are jointly developing a new, multi-level qualification program for ISO/IEC 20000, designed for a wide variety of staff involved in IT service provision. Both organizations are pleased that the first exam, ISO/IEC 20000 Foundation, has become available on January 1, 2008 after a successful pilot phase.

The market gears up for ISO 20000
At the end of November and during December 2007, EXIN and TÜV SÜD Akademie organized several ISO/IEC 20000 Foundation pilot sessions in various countries. The UK, Australia, Spain and Germany were targeted first, because these markets are prominently promising. In addition, the US, Japan and the Netherlands have been identified as high potential markets for qualifications based on ISO/IEC 20000. Pilots of the Japanese and Spanish versions of the exams may be expected during Q2 of 2008.

During the pilot phase about 60 people, experts and students have sat the examination, of which only three people did not pass the test. This relatively high pass rate is consistent with the expert level of the target group. In general the delegates were pleased with this new product and its outstanding quality, e.g. the alignment of the requirements and the exam, the level of difficulty, the validity and integrity. The feedback received during the pilots indicates that there is a lot of enthusiasm in the market about the program as a whole, and that candidates and training providers would also like to see the other levels within the program quickly available.

ISO/IEC 20000: a fundament
Not only the experts closely involved in the development of the new exams, but also many other stakeholders in the IT Service Management industry have informed EXIN that this new certification framework is highly appreciated. The benefit of achievable and measurable results for individuals, companies and (external) service providers, was often heard.

“The new ISO/IEC 20000 (BS 15000) standard is set to become a cornerstone for improving the management of external service providers. It involves the processes, policies, documentation, roles and responsibilities associated with service delivery and support.”  *Source: Gartner Inc., G00136652, ISO/IEC 20000 Has an Important Role in Sourcing Management, January 5, 2006

The quality controls of the ISO/IEC 20000 Foundation examination and supporting documentation are not only achieved by extensive piloting and reviewing. In addition, an international committee has been established to guarantee the quality of the certification program in all aspects, such as the strategy, structure, exam requirements, accreditation rules, et cetera. In the press release you will find an overview of the committee members.

Some benefits of the new program

  • ISO/IEC 20000 enables organizations to improve the quality of their IT Service Management processes, since it specifies the requirements for certification as well as the best practices in accordance with the standard.
  • The program is complete, it covers all levels of training and qualifications a company may need. The modular structure offers candidates the opportunity to enter the program at different levels for professionals with experience.
  • The qualifications are based on an international, independent Quality Standard.
  • The qualification program is framework neutral, using the core principles of well-known standards and best practices, such as ITIL®, MOF, COBIT, ISO 9000, CMMI and ASL.
